Developmental Domains

There are five developmental domains encompassed within the Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP), Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework (HSELOF) and the Parents as Teachers (PAT) Foundational Curriculum.

  • Approaches to Learning – focuses on how children learn. It refers to the skills and behaviors children use to engage in learning.
  • Social and Emotional Development – refers to a child’s ability to create and sustain meaningful relationships. Emotional development refers to a child’s ability to express, recognize and manage emotions.
  • Language and Literacy – refers to emerging abilities in listening and understanding (receptive language) and in using language (expressive Language).
  • Cognitive – includes reasoning, memory, problem solving and thinking skills that help young children understand and organize their world.
  • Perceptual, Motor, and Physical Development – foundational to children’s learning in all areas because it permits children to fully explore and function in their environment.

The Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP) is a developmental assessment instrument that is administered in natural settings through teacher observations, family observations, and examples of children’s work. Ongoing documentation of children’s knowledge and skills in every day environments is a recommended practice for early childhood assessment.

The HSELOF, PAT and DRDP Alignment Tool This alignment tool demonstrates connections between the five developmental domains encompassed within the HSELOF, DRDP and the PAT parent educator resources, parent handouts and parent-child activity pages found in the Foundational (prenatal to three years) curriculum.
