Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP)

The Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP) is a developmental assessment instrument that is administered in natural settings through teacher observations, family observations, and examples of children’s work. Ongoing documentation of children’s knowledge and skills in every day environments is a recommended practice for early childhood assessment.

The DRDP represents a full continuum of development from early infancy up to kindergarten entry and it is inclusive of children with Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). It has two views: Infant/Toddler view for use with children in infant/toddler programs, and the Preschool View, for children in preschool programs.

Procedure

Completing the DRDP is a three-part process:

  1. Step 1: Observation and Documentation – The DRDP focuses on a child’s behavior, knowledge, and skills. To capture a child’s behavior, the DRDP incorporates observation in natural settings. Refer to Observational Notes for more information on observing children and capturing observational notes.
  2. Step 2: Rating the Measures – For each of the DRDP measures, determine the latest developmental level the child has mastered, and mark it appropriately. Ratings are entered into the Learning Genie application using a tablet or desktop computer.
    • If Learning Genie is unavailable or if you’d like to capture information manually, use the appropriate DRDP Rating Record form to capture observational notes and enter them into Learning Genie at a later time. There are two versions of the rating record for Infant/Toddler and Preschool aged children.
  3. Step 3: Finalizing the Assessment – To finalize, simply review the assessment to make sure that you have entered a rating for all of the measures and that the Information Page is complete and up-to-date

For complete details on DRDP, refer to the appropriate version of the DRDP handbook: DRDP – A Developmental Continuum from Early Infancy to Kindergarten Entry (English & Spanish versions available):

  • Fundamental Plus View for use with Preschool aged children
  • Infant/Toddler View for use with infants and toddlers

Also refer to the quick reference document DRDP: Measures-at-a-Glance for infants/toddlers or preschool aged children

Important Notes:

  • For any measure marked “Unable to Rate,” insert documentation through an observation note describing the reason.

Frequency

The Education Staff completes DRDP ratings three times per year:

  • Fall (Within the first 60 days of child entry) – Complete full DRDP
  • Winter (approx. 70 days after 1st rating) – Complete school readiness and individual child goal measures on the DRDP
  • Spring (approx. 70 days after 2nd rating) – Complete full DRDP

Refer to the ongoing assessment timelines described below for specific DRDP due dates.

Ongoing Assessment Timelines

DRDP ratings are completed at specific points through the program year. Teachers and Home Visitors should refer to the appropriate Ongoing Assessment Timeline according to start dates to manage the rating process.

These timelines are based on classroom start dates and individual child’s start date. There can be several different timelines and they are subject to change each program year. If a child has a start date that doesn’t match one of these timelines, then a customized timeline is created by counting out 60 calendar days. If the due date befalls on a weekend or holiday then the DRDP must be completed on the last day of school occurring before the 60th day.

Training

DRDP training workshops are held periodically. Tutorials are available online and should be viewed prior to attending a training workshop.

Families are given the handout, An Overview of DRDP for Families to provide an overview of the DRDP.

  • Home Visitors provide this handout at home visit #4 and/or home visit #8.
  • Teachers, Associate Teachers and Primary Caregivers provide this handout at the first conference
