CA Training Ch 3 Part 1 Pedestrian Safety:

This training focuses on Drop Off and Pick Up procedures for children.

  • Drop-off/Pick-up procedures are designed to set a clear system that will ensure the safety of children during drop-off and pick-up procedures.

CA Training Ch 3 Part 2 Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures:

Shasta Head Start is legally responsible to ensure the safety of all enrolled children. This includes receiving authorization from the legal parent or guardian designating in writing who has permission to pick up their child from school or in case of an emergency

  • Drop-off/Pick-up procedures are designed to set a clear system that will ensure the safety of children during drop-off and pick-up procedures.

CA Training Ch 3 Part 2 Observation:

Take a moment to answer the following questions in your learning path binder:
How are parents greeted as they walk in?
How do staff note child attendance? Where is the sign-in log? What directions are children given during this time?
What are other things you observe related to drop-off?


CA Training Ch 3 Part 3 Greeting Children/Families:

Everything you do to get to know families will help you welcome them. Families who feel welcome in your classroom are likely to return and to become involved in the program.

  • The classroom environment you create and the ways you introduce the program can make families feel that they belong and that you appreciate their role in their children’s development and learning.

CA Training Ch 3 Part 3 Observation:

Take a moment to answer the following questions in your learning path binder:
How did staff members greet parents?
What conversations did you observe?  How were children greeted when they arrived?  Were there any positive phrases used that made families feel welcome?  How did families react?


CA Training Ch 3 Part 4 Daily Health Check:

Upon arrival at the center, each child is greeted and staff performs a brief assessment of his/her physical well-being.

  • Staff should consult the Health Manual Communicable Disease Policies for management of any unusual symptoms. A hard copy of the health manual is available at each center.

CA Training Ch 3 Part 5 Hand Washing Procedures:

Consistent hand washing procedures are vital to the health and wellbeing of staff and children.

  • Take time to read and practice proper hand washing procedures. These procedures are aligned with Universal Precautions and benefit everyone!
  • Be sure to model this method for children whenever possible.

CA Training Ch 3 Part 6 Meals:

Shasta Head Start mealtimes follow a “Family Style Eating” structure.

  • The objective of mealtime is to promote child wellness by providing nutrition and encouraging positive attitudes towards healthy foods.
  • Eating together with friends, parents, and staff provides an opportunity to learn about different foods, practice manners, to have conversations, and to enjoy mealtime with others.

CA Training Ch 3 Part 7 Bathroom Procedures:

Shasta Head Start has determined that supervision of children in bathrooms must be conducted by Shasta Head Start Staff Only.

  • There are strict rules in place to keep children safe and healthy.
  • Specifics on procedures can vary depending upon the age and developmental level of the child. Be sure you are familiar with what is appropriate for the children in your care.

CA Training Ch 3 Part 8 Tooth Brushing:

Caregivers/teachers should promote the habit of regular tooth brushing.

  • Regular tooth brushing with fluoride toothpaste is encouraged to reinforce oral health habits and prevent gingivitis and tooth decay.
  • Staff is encouraged to role model tooth brushing by brushing their own teeth with the children.
